Encaustic painting is a 2,000 year old process which involves pigmenting hot beeswax with oil paint. The heated, pigmented wax is applied to a surface — usually wood, canvas or paper — and scraped smooth with a pottery tool. As additional layers are painted onto the surface, each layer is fused to the one below it using a propane torch, heat gun or other heat source.
